Video Project

For my video project I set my images to "La Vie En Rose" by Edith Piaf. I was inspired by this song to make a rose themed stop motion video.

The Lead Pencil Studio is a collaboration of Annie and David. Architects turned artists. They are interested in creating things like billboards, ex: the billboard on the border of Canada and the US (Vancouver and Seattle) It was made by welding wire together and it is a billboard of the sky as it is when you see it. Corinne May Botz

Corinne May Botz is a photographer. Her books are called The Nutshell Series of Unexplained Death, Parameters, and Haunted Houses. The Nutshell Series of Unexplained Death is of doll houses that portray murder scenes. These are often used with police officer training to study a crime scene and try to find out what happened in the scene based on the available evidence. Parameters is a series of photographs of the homes of people who suffer from agoraphobia. While the series Haunted Houses is just that, a photographic exploration of haunted houses throughout the country.

Ben Volta & Photoshop Painting and Layering

Ben Volta does a lot of work in schools. He has worked with 8th graders in North Philadelphia schools in math classes creating coordinate grids relating to their lives. He has also done and anti violence project at Conwell Egan, which was installed in the PMA. He has made murals with teens on an old row home.

For my photoshop painting and layering project I used images of myself as well as images of nature, paintings, and hobbies of mine.

Photoshop & John Thompson

This week's assignment was to take one of my own photos to edit. I used a photo of Diamond Head in Oahu from my trip to Hawaii over the summer. I edited in a volcano and smoke, as well as a tourist and an aloha sticker with a plumeria flower.

This weeks lecture was given by H. John Thompson, a carpenter. He works in the basement of his grandfather's bakery and likes the lying Dutchman. He lives in Trevose, PA and that is where most of his inspiration comes from. He created a chain link fence for the University of the Arts and updated a mini version of a neighbor's house in Trevose.

Photoshop & Media

This week's assignment was to use a cultural image and change the meaning. I used landing on the moon in 1969 and added aliens and a frightened astronaut to change the meaning of this image.

I think photoshop does not particularly belong in the media. Especially the news. We should be given unedited images in the news because an edited image can most definitely change the image's meaning and the way we interpret it. Photoshop is fun to experiment with, but those experimental images frankly have no place in news papers and periodicals.

Doug Bucci & Scanner Face

Doug Bucci works in jewelry and metals. He has worked with CAD CAM printing to create many interesting compositions. He uses his diabetes as a springboard for much of his recent work.

For the Scanner Face project, I had been inspired by the movie Waking Life. I used this inspiration in my project to create a more abstract and animated version of myself.

Warning Label & Marianne Dages

Our assignment this week was to create a personalized warning label for ourselves. The label I made is referring to how loud I am. Friends have often told me that I have two volumes: loud, and louder.

Marianne Dages is a book artist and print maker. She talked to us about taking advantage of different media while we are here at school. She told us about the options of community studios, collaborations, partnering up, and applying for a residency when we graduate. Her words were very helpful and I will certainly remember her advice for when I graduate.

Candy Depew & Helvetica

Candy Depew is a very interesting woman. She is a ceramicist and print maker who has created magnificent ceramics all over the country and the world. Many themes found in her art are hearts, diamonds, skulls, and blood drips. She manages to make the skulls seem very cute and girly, but tuff at the same time. She has created skateboards and chopper bikes.

Helvetica is a documentary about the origins of the most popular font world wide. The font has been used for over 50 years. It is discussed in the documentary the way the type affects our lives today. The font is very reflective of Swiss design.

The Internet

The internet these days has created a somewhat artistic revolution. Photosharing, blog keeping, fan fictions, and videos are all examples of things many people do for leisure and to share with others over the internet.
I personally think it is a very good thing, however, sometimes issues of copyright come into play. I think a good standard for society to use would be this: don't try to make a profit off of someone else's work. Sharing things and making small alterations for fun is fine, but don't do anything that you wouldn't want someone else to do to your work.

Peter Hanley's Studio Revolution

What I learned from Peter Hanley's lecture concerning the studio revolution, was that the studio has changed. The artist in his or her studio is no longer the image of an immense show room, filled with art (granted, those still do exist, just not as widely). The studio is now seen as being wherever the artist is. It is truly a studio within the mind. This is because the mind is the primary creative place for artists. And this is something we should embrace.

Walk Bike Ride

Over the weekend I went downtown with some friends. Our ultimate destination was Cosi on Chestnut to grab lunch. We took the subway and got off at the wrong stop, so we had quite a walk. I took pictures of the things around me and I especially liked taking pictures of a closed shop that had broken windows and graffiti.
